Ford F3L Car

The car was designed by GT40 designer, Len Bailey and built by Alan Mann Racing
In West Byfleet in Surrey, with support from Ford in Detroit. It was a radical departure from the GT40 and was powered by a Ford DFV F1 engine. Even though the shape was stunning for its day, there were aerodynamic problems and the cockpit was cramped. Two cars were built for the 1968 season and one was written off in an horrific accident in the Nurburgring 1000 km. Driver was Chris Irwin who was seriously injured and cause of the accident was a hare that ran across the road. The car did a massive backward flip and came down on its roof. I was told that it was so bad that the marshals ran away. Other drivers pulled up to assist Irwin.

One theory was that the hare got jammed into the left front brake thereby reducing braking by a critical 25% as Irwin was heading up a rise. More likely was that the hare broke the underbody mountings which caused the nose to lift and which created a wing effect with upward lift.

In 1969 one more coupe and a spyder version were built. As the car required more development money and never won a race Ford canned the project.

My brief involvement with the car, which is the rebuilt Irwin car and now owned by David Piper, is described below.

In February, 1987 I interviewed David Piper for my book on the history of the Kyalami circuit at his house in Windlesham, Surrey. David and co-drivers competed in the Kyalami Nine Hour and the Springbok Series from 1961 to 1969 and won the Nine Hour six times, five times in Ferraris and the last time in a Porsche 917. Imagine writing a book on Wimbledon and not including John McEnroe!

At the end of the interview David told me about the International Sports Prototype series that he and friends started in 1981 and that he would love to bring the series to South Africa. ‘Done’, I said. His body language said, ‘Oh, yeah’.

The ISP series is for racing sports cars from the 1960s and early 1970s era, ie AC Cobras, Ferraris, Porsches, GT40s, F3L, Lolas, McLarens, Matras, Chevrons, etc. Even though the cars were worth fortunes at the time and much more today Piper and friends decided to race them instead of putting them in glass boxes. They were after all racing cars and as such Piper and company would enjoy driving them and would give pleasure to spectators, many of whom just love that era of racing. I don’t think the current sports car series comes near. The atmosphere has gone particularly at the new clinical Le Mans with the old Esses no longer there. If the Bentleys were painted blue they could be mistaken for Donald Campbell’s Blue Bird speedboat. Agree? Disagree?

David told me about his accident at Le Mans in 1970 when doing film sequences for Steve McQueen’s film ‘Le Mans’. Coming through White House corner a rear tyre deflated and the Porsche was totalled. The car broke in half and all that kept the two halves together was his right foot trapped under the throttle. He remembers lying in a ditch with brake fluid dripping on the open wound and two nuns bending over him to assist him.

Back in England the foot was amputated above the ankle. One day in hospital with his racing career apparently over old Piper was feeling a bit sorry for himself. In walked Ferrari engineer and works driver, Mike Parkes, with legless Battle of Britian ace, Douglas Bader. Bader glared at Piper, undid his belt and dropped his trousers. He said, ‘Look at me, old chap, you have nothing to worry about!’ David said with a grin that he suddenly came right BIG TIME! Some years later he discovered that he could drive a racing car again which lead to the ISP series. He stomps his plastic foot on the throttle and then brakes with the left foot. At Le Mans last June in the classic race before the 24 Hour he got his 917 to over 200 mph down the Mulsanne straight. In December he turned 73 and I really can’t figure out how he does it. Bader and Piper – Bulldog breed as they say!

Anyway, when I returned home after my February, 1987 trip I set about organising David’s ISP South African series. For about nine months I liaised with Liz Piper with regard to air tickets, shipping costs, etc. As sponsorship was required I handed my file to a committee member of the Western Province Car Club which controls our local Killarney Circuit. This guy can sell ice to Eskimos and persuaded the boss of Yellow Pages to sponsor the series. It was on and three races were planned, one at Killarney in Cape Town, one at the East London Grand Prix circuit (where Jody grew up – the city not the circuit!) and a Monaco type round the houses at Durban.

Alfa Romeo 8C Spider

The 8C Competizione was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003. The lines of the twin seater are meant to echo the styling of Alfas of the 1950s and 1960s, and the "Competizione" name is a reference to the 1948 6C 2500 Competizione, which competed in the 1949 and 1950 Mille Miglia race and came third both times. It was in the latter of these two races that the car was driven by Juan-Manuel Fangio and Augusto Zanardi. It won the 1950 Targa Florio. A 3.0 litre prototype was built but not produced. These 6C 2500 models were among the last vehicles with links to the pre-war cars.

FJ Cruiser 2012

Race programs have always been used by automakers to increase awareness and raise vehicles' credibility in the eyes of the consumer. On November 15, the latest example will be on display at the Baja 1000, where Toyota will have a race-prepped FJ Cruiser on hand for the challenging 1000-mile competition. Veteran racer Rod Millen, his son Ryan, and Adam Dupre will pilot the truck, which is based on the upcoming FJ Cruiser TRD limited edition. The full suite of mods is listed after the jump, but the highlights are obviously the fully redone suspension, rollcage, Hella lights, racing fuel cell, and off-road exhaust.
The FJ Race Truck contains several performance and safety modifications including a revised suspension and heavy-duty rollcage among the most visible, yet it remains primarily a stock vehicle. Performance features include BFG A/T LT285/75R16 tires on 16-inch black TRD wheels with two onboard spares. The Fuel Safe Sportsman 22-gallon fuel cell provides an added safety feature.

The Race Truck is based on the all-new Toyota Racing Development (TRD) Special Edition FJ Cruiser sport utility vehicle (SUV). The TRD Special Edition FJ Cruiser is a unique limited edition package available on 2007 FJ Cruiser four-wheel-drive models. The special package contains several performance, exterior, and interior enhancements.

Only 3,200 of the TRD Special Edition FJ Cruiser will be produced. It goes on sale at Toyota dealerships this week.

Rod Millen is synonymous with rallying, off-road racing, and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. After enjoying tremendous success in rallying, Millen joined forces with Toyota in 1991, where he dominated the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Racing Series, becoming the only driver in the 12-year history of the series to win three consecutive Grand National Sport Truck titles. Rod is also the current record holder in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb with an overall time of 10 minutes 4.6 seconds, set in 1994 in an all-wheel drive Toyota Celica Turbo. He claimed five overall Pikes Peak Championships and eight class championships.

Following in the family tradition, Ryan Millen has enjoyed motorsports success since he began racing pee-wee dirt bikes in 1994. Racing in New Zealand, Ryan captured the 2002/03 South Island Formula Ford Championship.

Rod Millen founded MillenWorks in 1980. The company evolved from a high-performance racing company into today's diverse engineering, prototyping and product development business. Headquartered in Tustin, Calif., MillenWorks has teamed with Lockheed on unmanned military vehicles, and also specializes in concept vehicles, contributing to the Lexus IS 430, Lexus Street Rod, Toyota Retro Cruiser, and the Ultimate Toyota Celica.

CR-Z' stands for 'Compact Renaissance Zero' - an expression intended to capture the idea of a renaissance in the design of compact cars that begins anew from fundamentals.

This design research model of a lightweight hybrid sports car features advanced technologies that deliver enjoyable driving for all while reducing the vehicle's environmental footprint.

Exterior design
Designed to be 'Futuristic and Dynamic', the CR-Z combines powerful performance in a compact form with a futuristic image. For its frontal view, an over-sized grill with a high-performance look is offset by openings on each side that lighten the overall feel. In the rear, tube-shaped rear combination lamps ensure better rearward visibility. Design details emphasising the CR-Z's advanced image include door mirrors that provide high visibility in a stylish form, LED headlights patterned after luminous bodies to convey a sharp impression, and jauntyfin-shaped sub-lights. Large, 19-inch wheels are ready for dynamic driving performance.

Honda CR-Z Concept 2007Interior design
The key words for the CR-Z's interior design are 'Hi-tech and Sporty'. The goal was to create an all-new sporty interior that fuses the liberating feel of airy spaciousness with an advanced interface that brings out the fun of the drive. Mesh material on a simple framework construction is used throughout the interior to convey a light, sophisticated image without being oppressive. In the cockpit, the meter unit conveys the image of advanced technology ensconced in a piece of glass artwork, offering the functionality of immediate recognition while enhancing the driving experience with a futuristic and exhilarating feeling.

The first major executive chauffeur fleet in the UK to switch its cars to hybrid power – that’s the claim of Chauffeur-First. The London-based company says it’s the emergence of Lexus Hybrid Drive technology and the readiness of its customers to think green that has enabled it to start transforming its operations.

Chauffeur-First has already taken on 18 Lexus GS 450h performance saloons, all top-of-the-range SE-L models, with two of the new LS 600h luxury saloons due for delivery and a further five GS 450h. The company hopes to order another 20 Lexus hybrid cars before the end of the year. Its existing 62-vehicle fleet includes BMW, Mercedes and Audi executive models, as well as conventionally powered Lexus GS 300s. Chauffeur-First intends to phase these out and replace them with Lexus hybrids, retaining only a contingent of Chrysler Grand Voyager MPVs for use when extra capacity is required.

Based in Limehouse, Chauffeur-First is one of the fastest-growing companies at the top end of the executive car business, with 60% of its work made up of airport runs and inter-city transfers, and the rest transport around London. “Other chauffeur hire companies have been introducing the Toyota Prius, but as far as we know nobody has yet addressed the executive market in this way,” says Chauffeur-First’s Sales Director Alex Bell. “We’re excited about it, and our customers think it’s wonderful. That’s because every company has been coming out with carbon-neutrality statements, yet ground transportation has remained a problem for them.

“The Lexus cars are very stylish and sleek, and passengers think they’re fantastic. They also appreciate their quietness – they can be picked up at 5am to go to the airport and the family will sleep through their departure! The chauffeurs really like them too, especially considering the cars they’re moving from,” says Mr Bell. “The Lexus have every conceivable extra, but supplied as standard. Driving them is very easy and relaxing, and they’re responsive cars. The power is there but they’re so economical – we‘re getting on average 40 mpg, with the best results on city streets. And because of the electronic-controlled Continuous Variable Transmission, the ride is as smooth as you could ever imagine. It’s as if there are no gear changes at all!”

The high-performance Lexus GS 450h’s 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine and high-output electric motor give it a top speed of 155mph and 0-62mph acceleration in 5.9sec, but with combined-circuit CO 2 emissions of only 186g/km.

The LS 600h luxury saloon on sale in the autumn, has a 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine and electric motor with output of 443bhp, yet official combined-circuit fuel consumption is almost 30mpg and CO 2 emissions under 220g/km. The vehicles will be replaced on an 18-monthly/60,000-mile basis.

“Executives have traditionally been driven around in black cabs and gas-guzzling cars,” says Alex Bell. “Lexus has invested millions of pounds over a number of years in finding the solution, so either other manufacturers must now buy in its technology or waste millions reinventing the wheel. “I think it will be three or four years before anyone else comes close to the standard of Lexus.”

The outgoing Kia Sorento may be known more for its affordable price tag than its luxury appointments, but the Korean automaker is looking to change that with a 2010 overhaul. And when we say overhaul, the transformation is complete, save for the carryover name. The new Sorento goes from a body-on-frame SUV to a unibody crossover. Not only does the new Sorento have a third row of seats and more cargo space, it’ll likely return superior fuel economy as well. The new Kia Sorento also wears more modern-looking sheet metal, a better looking interior, and amenities like iPod support. Engines for the US market haven’t yet been announced, but we’re expecting Kia’s 3.8L V6 and a base 2.4L four cylinder model.
