Opel's Corsa is a very popular compact tuning platform over in Europe. Open any European tuning rag and you'll see its pages littered with tuned and tweaked versions of GM Germany's feisty two door. The aftermarket business is just as popular in Europe as it is in the U.S. and Japan, and Euro tuners (the people) spend billions of Euros (the money) a year on tricking out their rides.

Opel sees this healthy aftermarket as billions of Euro in lost profits. Why should a Corsa owner send his/her cash and car over to Steinmetz when GM can build a hot Corsa right from the factory? To fill the public's growing need for a fast hatch, Opel has built its fastest Corsa ever - the Corsa OPC. Opel fans (all two of you in the U.S.) may already be familiar with the "OPC" name, as GM Germany has slapped the badge on other tuned Opels such as the Astra and Vectra. With the introduction of the Corsa OPC, the total number of factory-tuned Opels gets bumped up to six.

So what makes the Corsa OPC so special? Well, it's a hatch of the "hot" variety, meaning its engine and suspension have been built up considerably. This Corsa gets its motivation from a turbocharged 1.6 liter inline four that pushes out 192 bhp and 230 Nm (169 lb.-ft.) of torque. Those numbers aren't bad - especially considering the engine's diminutive size. Still Opel knows that Corsa OPC drivers will sometimes find themselves wanting an extra bit of power, so an overboost system was added to allow the engine to temporarily increase its torque by 15 percent.

All this power, plus the close-ratio six-speed manual transmission can get the Corsa OPC from null to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.2 seconds. Top speed in the Corsa is a respectable 225 km/h (139.8 mph) - not bad for a car with "just" a 1.6.

With the Corsa OPC being a real "Euro-tuned" ride, a lot of attention was given to the car's suspension set up. Opel - being based in Germany and all - tuned the hot Corsa on the famed Nurburgring Nordschleife. Upgrades to the suspension made include a stronger rear axle profile, revised springs and dampers that drop the ride height by 15 mm and a revised stability control program (which can be turned completely off if so desired). 17-inch wheels come standard, but 18-inchers are optional. The car's internally-ventilated brake discs measure a hefty 308 mm in the front and 264 mm in the rear.

Part of the appeal of a hot hatch is its appearance. Special attention was given to the Corsa OPC's exterior so that it would appeal to the German boy-racer types that will likely be all over this thing. The OPC's front end gets a more aggressive treatment, as does the rear - check out that triangle-shaped exhaust in the center. The car's side mirrors and rear wing are also OPC-exclusive.

Special attention has been paid to the OPC's cockpit as well. Depending on the vehicle color chosen, some of the OPC's interior trim pieces (such as the rings around the vents) will be given a silver or blue color. The Opel OPC's front racing buckets were developed in conjunction with super seat maker Recaro. These seats are said to offer all the support that a traditional racing bucket has with the added safety and security of integrated side airbags.

The Opel Corsa OPC is now available for order in Europe for a rather affordable (for Europe) 22,560 Euros ($30,204). With exchange rates being what they are (and given Americans' dislike for small vehicles), there's a near 100-percent chance that we'll never see the Corsa OPC here in the States. Still, one never knows... If Saturn's new Opel - the Astra - is a huge sales success for GM's U.S. side, we just may see the Corsa offered here. Again, the chances of that happening are slim to none - so get your fill of the Corsa OPC by clicking on our Media Page.

I do. Driving the SS with it's 400-Plus Hp and manual 6-speed brings back fond memories of earlier Camaro's, 440 Chargers and Road Runner's, GTO's, and L-88 Corvettes. This new Muscle/Pony car, is so much better then they were, yet has all the elements of the visceral performance of those bygone Torque monsters. I once drove a 68' Camaro with a 396" Engine and drum brakes all around. Yes, you could order them that way. Talk about seeing your life pass before you while you were standing on the brakes with both feet while they faded in to full coast mode at the approach of a tight 30MPH right hander and your still doing 80 MPH, is something you will never forget.Having the top down will eliminate the claustrophobic feeling of the hard top version.

Audi is launching a fascinating new model series for its entry into a highly emotionally charged segment of the market. The A5 successfully unites the acclaimed Audi design language and thrilling dynamic driving performance, and combines generous refinement with the brand’s characteristic quality and sophistication.

The Audi S5 is an extra sporty offering to complete the new series. A powerful V8 FSI engine gives the S5 a dynamic edge, which underscores its athletically accentuated design. The A5 and S5 are available to order from 6 March 2007 with the first vehicles due for delivery from June.

The Audi S5 is an unique competitor among high-performance coupes, thanks to its combination of V8 FSI technology and quattro permanent four-wheel drive. The eight-cylinder engine with its superb power delivery has worthy counterparts in the specially tuned sports suspension and high-performance brakes. Subtle, but clear design elements inside and out serve to distinguish this
coupe as a high performance athlete in a league of its own. The Audi S5 goes on sale with the launch of the Audi A5 series.

Engine and Running Gear

2008-audi-s5-09 The figures alone are fascinating enough, but they only hint at the impressive driving experience the S5 offers. The eight-cylinder engine has a rated power output of 354 bhp. Its peak torque is 325 lb-ft, which it already delivers at 3,500 rpm. Within just 5.1 seconds the Audi S5 can sprint to 62 mph. But no figures can adequately describe the supreme free-revving character, the spontaneous response, the continuous power build-up, or the thrilling sound of this eight-cylinder engine. The V8 naturally derives its enormous power potential from the innovative FSI direct injection technology with high compression and optimum fuel mixture formation. The six-speed manual gearbox with its very precise guiding of the gear lever and short throw action makes every gear change a pleasure. The quattro permanent four-wheel drive of course provides perfect traction with variable torque distribution 2008-audi-s5-05from its basic setting of 40 percent to the front and 60 percent to the rear axle. Within a fraction of a second, the dynamic drivetrain system adapts to the current driving conditions and constantly delivers the ideal distribution of drive torque.

The Audi S5’s sports suspension is tuned to enhance the coupe’s performance with particularly dynamic handling. The special high-performance brakes, recognizable by their black painted brake calipers, always ensure precise deceleration. And finally, the ESP electronic stabilization program can be deactivated in two stages whenever the driver wishes to exploit the potential of the Audi S5 to the full on a suitable stretch of road.

Design and Interiors

2008-audi-s5-08 While the design of the Audi A5 forms a balanced synthesis of sportiness and elegance, the Audi S5 displays the more vigorous features of a powerfully built athlete: the radiator grille possesses the specific look of an Audi S model – painted in platinum grey and fitted with vertical chrome inlays. The front and rear bumpers have a more pronounced outline and the air inlet grilles are more striking. The aluminum-look exterior mirror housings make an overtly sporty impression, as do the color-keyed door sill trim and the dual-branch exhaust system with four oval tailpipes. Nevertheless, the model’s sporty attributes always have a functional aspect: for instance, the more pronounced spoiler in the boot lid yields additional aerodynamic downforce.

2008-audi-s5-07However, true strength comes from within and the interior design of the Audi A5 thoroughly underscores its athletic character. The sports seats, sports steering wheel, instruments with grey dials and aluminum door sill plates provide a dynamic and refined atmosphere. The program does, of course, provide ample scope to fulfil individual interior design wishes: the inlays are one example – here the choice is between carbon, aluminum, stainless steel or wood. After all, the Audi S5 should perfectly match its owner’s individual ideas and expectations.

2008-audi-s5-10 Alongside the coupe’s 18-inch wheels with the new S design and 245/40 R18 tires, the standard equipment specification for the S5 features items such as xenon plus headlights with impressive daytime running lights in the form of an LED light strip, or sports seats with electronic adjustment.
